We took 2 days of sightseeing along the great ocean road in the form of a private tour. One day would have just covered the coast, but with the extra day, we got off the main tourist road and discovered some truly beautiful forest areas. It all seemed hidden, so you really need the extra time, a good map, or in our case, a good tour guide who knows where he was going!
Nothing short of perfection! I own my own tour company in far North Queensland, so I’m a hard one to please and always looking for ways a tour can be improved upon (what can I say, it’s in my DNA), but right from the off, these guys nailed it. Professional, efficient but at the same time fun and friendly. An excellent overall tour experience. Sam was our guide on Day 1, and was really great with our group, but then due to a family emergency overnight, he had to be replaced by James. We were slightly disappointed to hear about the change of guide, as our group were getting along so well with Sam, but James turned out to be equally as good. And it was a seamless changeover. So much so that when James came to pick us up from our overnight accommodation in Apollo Bay, he had already been tipped off by Sam as to exactly what our preferred coffee order was. James showed up on the doorstep, on time with 4 individual takeaway coffee’s, for each member of our group, and a welcoming smile. He was also briefed of our group’s dynamics, including how to handle one of the more ‘difficult’ members of the group. Spoiler alert - it wasnt me!
Smoothly run tour. Our guide made us feel at ease. It’s a curved road but he was a safe capable driver. It was a simple process to book. Paid a small deposit to book the date out, and then we paid half way through the tour. No pressure for upfront payment, which we had from other tour operators. You soon learn what is more important to them the cash or the customer. Staying overnight in Apollo Bay and waking up for sunrise of the local beach was magical.
All things being equal, one would fly to the other side of the world and find your relatives waiting for you, who would take you everywhere you wanted to go. This happens only rarely. In Victoria, the alternative is the private two-day Great Ocean Road Tour. There are many things to see. The 12 Apostles, despite being battered by incessant surf, remain upright. The Loch Ard, a sailing ship, was wrecked in the Loch Ard Gorge. Miraculously, two seafarers survived the boiling surf. The Great Ocean Road is Victoria's top tourist attraction, it's worth seeeing,
We loved this tour. The 2 days gave us a bit of extra time to see the road and we felt less pressured with time. The scenery was jaw dropping. Everything was really well organised, including the breakfast, lunch and dinner venues, which were ultimately our decision as to where we ate, but we went with the recommendations and they were all extremely good. An easy five out of five.
I decided to take the 2 day, 1 night great ocean road thinking it would be similar to California's Big sur. It was not that. It had a similar vibe but it's much more laid back with greater space between places worth stopping. The trip I took ended up being a little rainy/blowy which hampered the trip somewhat in spots. Sightseeing is less interesting in strong cold winds. With all that said - it was fantastic thanks to James. He always kept us entertained with some great stories of his interesting life. The trip was tailored towards things we'd find interesting or entertaining and there was plenty of room to adjust the schedule as the day went on so long as you reached certain key milestones on time (meant to keep you on pace to reach the overnight location in Apollo Bay). Despite some slim pickings for food (small coastal towns tend to be like that) he knew exactly which places were worth going to and it was some of the better food in Australia I had. Favorite parts: James, Parrots at kennett river, Food, rainforest Least favorite: Melbourne weather, many of the sightseeing stops on the bland side.
We had a little difficulty in finding their contact details, but once we were in contact, we were provided with excellent information all the way up until the tour, including itinerary (which we could tweak) and recommendations on where to stay (spot on), even advice on how to getting to the city from the airport a few days before the tour. Tour was really well put together. Stops well spaced apart. Very varied. Missed all the traffic. Nice car for the journey. Really excellent job. Even after the tour, James was a valuable source of local information, hints and tips of what to do and where to go. Now that’s service!
Wow! What a tour! We are still talking about this tour with our friends despite being back home 2 weeks now! The road was mesmerising. The scenery was just.....well words fail me. James was our guide. He clearly knows the area well and some of the more ‘colourful’ locals - some of whom were enjoying the Melbourne cup day in one of the towns we passed through (which is a horse race) a bit too much *glug glug* The tour had everything, and was set at our own pace - which is at a snails pace! We wanted to really enjoy each stop and not be rushed. Our overnight stop was in Apollo Bay. Watching the sunrise over the beach is also something I’m going to remember for a long time. Best sunrise I’ve ever seen. Such a beautiful town and setting. Booking the tour was easy and the final payment we made on the tour, which we preferred rather than paying for the whole tour upfront.
My family and I did a private 2 day tour with James. It was very varied. Almost like one of those quiz shows where everything goes past you on a conveyor belt, and then you have to try your hardest to remember everything you have seen and done in the day. But just replace the cuddly bear with real koala bears! So yes, It’s an action packed tour that’s for sure, certainly value for money and far less stressful then driving yourself (and other family members who I will not name! *cough* mother-in-law *cough*)
Ok, so I’m time poor. I don’t normally have the time review places I visit. But I had to mention this tour. It was exceptional. We choose the 2 day option, after discussing a few of the details with James over the phone. I recommend this rather than rushing head in to book. That way you can really work out what Tour is best for you. We were surprised by the diversity of the road. We were just expecting nice ocean vistas, but it is so much more than that, and James really customised the tour to suit us. Highly Recommended.
